Breastfeeding

Hello lovelies,
Hope everyone is keeping well.
So, when I was pregnant, I always just assumed that id breastfeed and it would all come naturally and it was easy. Afterall, breastfeeding is the what our boobs were made for, right?
Unfortunately, it wasnt as simple as that.
I had taken a 4 hour breastfeeding class while i was pregnant, I had watched countless youtube videos on how to get the perfect latch and read several articles on the subject. Nothing, and I mean NOTHING, prepared me for how difficult those first 2 weeks were. I even described to my husband that the worst part of all of having a baby, labour included, was the pain of my nipples. SERIOUSLY!
I genuinely thought that baby would just snuggle up and feed like it was the most natural thing in the world. Boy was I wrong.
I used the Multi-mam products for those first few difficult days and they were fantastic (thanks to my midwives for hooking me up with both products! The products were so good that i sent the hubby and my own mam to stock me up for at home!) I also went on Daktarin- on the nipples and in babys mouth after feeds due to the severity of the cuts on the nipples and risk of bacterial or fungal infection
Dont get me wrong, now I love feeding Indie and it really is such a wonderful experience. We have such a close bond that I never even dreamed of, we know eachother, we're already best friends. I can calm her down like no one else. She comes to me and just goes quiet, burrows into me and nods off to sleep. Its my favourite part of becoming a mammy.
I really do wish more people knew how hard it was going to be for the first 2 weeks, and i wish more that everyone knew how lovely it is after that first stage. Maybe breastfeeding would be more accepted in society. I really noticed the lack of breastfeeding talk/ acceptance/ normalcy when I tried to find nursing clothes. Clothes to make it easy to breastfeed in public, or even just around family wihtout having to practically strip down to the nip.. literally! I trawled through shops and websites trying to find clothes that didnt cost a bomb (Dont even get me started... H&M are a good bet, and ASOS too)
I really feel so lucky that I have been able to feed Indie this long (Shes 6 weeks old tomorrow). When I started, I thought "This is never going to last", even giving her a top up of formula on night 2 to give the poor nips a break, then my milk came in on day 4/5, and finally my sister and public health nurse suggested nipple shields. Hallelujah! I had bought a pair of shields during my pregnancy, but never knew how to use them and they didnt enter my mind while i was crying in pain worrying how I was ever going to be able to continue to feed; until the public health nurse arrived- mid-feed: the latch was good, baby was guzzling away, swallowing, but why was I in so much agony. Once baby finished feeding, the nurse had a look at my bleeding, bistered (yes blisters) nips and she realised that my nipples were flat.
I didnt realise there was such a thing. Growing up youre always told that 'everything is normal', we all have different bodies, big and small and theres no such thing as 'normal'.... except, now I know, when breastfeeding. Indie was latching fine but loosing suction on the nipple as it wasnt inside her mouth far enough. This caused excessive suction and loss of suction, causing friction which meant i got horrid blisters, which burst and bled. I know, it sounds glam! As you can imagine, it was excrutiating! This is where the nipple shields came in. They have been my lifesaver. Made of thin silicone, they create a barrier between babys mouth and the nipple, but also they help to draw the nipple up into the shield, allowing baby to get better grip, suction and therefore a more successful feed. Overtime, the natural nipple tissue becomes more pliable and the nipple shield is no longer required. Im now getting to this stage, where I have began to wean Indie off the nipple shield and occasionally feed her without the shield at all.
Theyre so simple to use, you just place them on the nipple, and feed as normal, though you may need to hold the shield in place. I'm so delighted they worked for me and I hope this will help any mammys out there wishing to feed past those first difficult weeks. Trust me, it gets easier! Theres a great page on nipple shields use and care HERE. This post is only my personal experience!

Whats in my hospital bag

Hi lovelies,
So I spent countless hours watching youtube videos on what to pack in my hospital bag while I was pregnant, and made several lists, and packed and re-packed my bag countless times!
The truth is, that youre never going to know exactly what to bring on your first baby. None the less, I took some photos to write a blog post of whats in my bag, and now that I have the experience, Im going to share with you what I did or did not need. Hopefully it'll help some of you with your own hospital bags.
I brought 2 bags with me for my hospital stay. One for during labour, and another for the hospital stay post-labour.
I'll start with the bag for labour.
Firstly, I brought fluffy socks, slippers, a dressing gown and 2 nightdresses. I brought one for labour (navy) and another for just after labour so id feel a bit clean. Your feet can get a bit cold during labour so I'd recommend the fluffy socks!
Next I brought a cellular blacket for wrapping baby in, babys first outfit packed in a sandwich bag to make it easier for the other half to find :) And also a cardigan, but I didnt end up using the cardigan as its plenty warm in the maternity ward for baby. Babys first outfit consisted of a vest, babygrow, hat, and nappy. But since we did skin to skin, all we needed was the hat and nappy, but the vest and babygrow came in useful once we got back to the maternity ward.
Snacks are always important! Labour can be a long process, especially when youre induced, like i was. Lucky Indie was born less than 20 hours after I arrived to the hospital, for some people it can be a full 2 days or so! So I brought some chocolate(of course), rice cakes, sucky sweets, breakfast bars and mixed nuts. And not to be too TMI, but the nuts did come in handy for keeping the post-labour bowel moving.
Lastly, I packed a toiletry bag with a few essentials. Underwear, a facecloth and the elastics for my belly-trace (I only have these because I had been in the hospital the week previous being checked out and they gave me these to bring along with me for next time). I really recommend bringing a facecloth with you, it is what came in most useful during labour. It is so damn warm in the maternity ward, and they really crank up the heat right before you begin pushing. It was great for keeping damp to cool me down, and mopping up sweat. Nice!
In the toiletry bag: Tissues, lens solution, deodorant, mouthwash, toothpaste and brush, lady wipes, water spray, vaseline and hair bobbins and clips. The mouthwash was useful as your mouth can get so dry and when your huffing and blowing, its nice to know youre not knocking people out with your stinky breath. The water spray was also brilliant- I got mine in Dealz- because of the heat, it was really good for cooling me down.. and my hubby too. Also, the vaseline was handy due to dry lips from using the gas and air.
Also not pictured here are maternity pads.. needed for obvious reasons
Next onto the hospital stay bag:
2 dark coloured towels for post-labour showering, I got these ones in Penneys. Moses basket sheets for the cot during the hospital stay, theyre cosier than the pillow cases used to cover the matress in the hospital. And a hooded bath towel for baby- this one is from the Baby Elegance package I posted about earlier.>
Clothes/ outfits for the baby. I didnt even use the outfits, except for her going home outfit.. You change nappies, vests and babygrows so regularly that its best to just pack them all seperately instead of in 'outfit form'. My hubby ended up bringing in a bunch of separates for during the stay and i didnt use these packs at all.
Jammies for me during my stay. I picked up these all in Penneys. I got the button down kind thinking they'd be handy for breastfeeding, and were nice and light, but i never wore them. It was way too hot to wear long sleeves. The best thing I found to wear was jogger style bottoms and a string top or vest. String tops were handy to just pull down to feed without having to completely strip off.
I also brought some extra toiletries for my stay. In this toiletry bag i brought:
A shower puff, Arnica tablets, Hand sanitiser, tissues, face wipes, feminine soap free wash, moisturiser, lanolin nipple balm, shampoo and conditioner, hairbrush and a razor.
I didnt use the arnica tablets, while they were recommended in several blogs and youtube videos I just never thought of them, once baby arrives, you have more on your mind. I also didnt use the shampoo and conditioner, as my hair was quite dry during my pregnancy i could go a few days without washing it.
The lanolin nipple balm is from Boots brand, but i didnt like it. Its really too thick and baby didnt like the taste of it. I had a lot of nipple problems beginning to breastfeed, I can see how people give it up so soon. Luckily I had great midwives who gave me the multi-mam compresses and nipple balm, which were my saviour.. and funny enough, baby actually liked the taste of the balm. I think the boots one was just too thick and greasy. So if youre thinking of breastfeeding, I recommend getting the multi-mam products; they can be more expensive, but they are so worth it. I dont think I would still be breastfeeding almost 4 weeks later if it wasnt for them (and nipple shields, but ill talk about these again)
I also brought a small stand up mirror, and basic makeup products. I got a tester of bb cream from my local pharmacy and it worked fine for the few days when i was having visitors and wanted to feel a bit more like 'me'.
Lastly, I brought water wipes, breast pads, and maternity pads (boots brand).
Unfortunately, I ended up getting an infection around my stitches following the labour and I really think it had a lot to do with the maternity pads I was using. The Boots brand have plastic sticky backs on them, like most pads, to stick onto your underwear.. and this stops your down-there from getting some air, especially when you spend a lot of your time sitting and lying in bed in the days following labour. So I really recommend getting the ones which have no sticky back on them. The hospital gave me a packet of them to use for the remainder of my stay and after just one day, my infection had cleared up almost completley. They look like this:
Sexy right? But trust me, these will feel amazing when youre so swollen down there.
So thats really it for my hospital bags, please feel free to comment or mail me on facebook if you have any questions at all.

€999 Baby Package

Baby equipment can be so expensive, and having my first baby, I really wanted to buy new pieces as opposed to getting hand-me-downs, as hopefully we will be lucky enough to have more children in the future. So I really wanted to have my own products!
I came accross this package by chance when i first became pregnant, and headed into Baby Elegance in Blanchardstown to have my first look around as a mum-to-be. There were no other products I looked at after seeing this deal, as it is such good value and the buggy travel system looked great.
Now that I have bought it, and using it these past 3 weeks I cannot reccommend it enough. The travel system really is fantastic, and the buggy opens and folds easily with one hand, plus it comes in lots of colours. I went for the light grey colour, its fab! The moses basket is sturdy but easily transportable. And the high chair folds down to be really compact.
One of the best points about this package is that you place a deposit and can pay it off gradually.

Promise to write up a "what to pack in your hospital bag" soon. Chat soon, Conni xoxo

She has arrived

Hello lovelies,
So my last blog post was the day i went to be induced, and despite the last week of being pregnant feeling like i was going to be pregnant forever, baby Indie Anne Murray was born on the 19th August at 2.39pm weighing 7lbs 7oz and measuring 50.5cm long, after a labour of 12 hours.
I will do a post on being induced and my labour another day, as i have had a few mails from pregnant princesses asking for information on my experience, so ill be sure to share soon.
So, here is my baby girl:
Don't those lips just break your heart? I know i am biased, but I think shes the most gorgeous baby that ever was created :) That second photo was about 1.5 hours after Indie was born, and I just love it <3
Indie is 3 weeks old today, and I cant imagine my life without her now. It has been a really emotional time, but the happiest and most wonderful of my whole life. I never knew I could love something or someone as much as I love her. And how much more I love my husband seeing how he is with her too! I love our family, its my favourite!
I will write a post on what i packed in my hospital bags next, and what i actually needed and didnt need so keep your eyes out.
As always, dont forget to check out my facebook page HERE and Instagram HERE for more updates and baby overloads :)

Induction Day

Hello lovelies,
So today is my induction date. A date I hoped I'd never have to keep! My due date was August 9th, and hoped baby would be here by August 12th when I had my next hospital appointment. But here we are 9 days late, and heading for an induction this evening.
I've been feeling mixed emotions about it. While the older generation think its great that we mums now know everything thats happening at each stage in pregnancy and labour, sometimes its not the best... As there are a million horror stories for each good story.
Being induced was the LAST thing i wanted to happen, as I know several people who had horrible induced births. Also, any information given by the hospital or healthcare advisors include 'what can go wrong' with being induced. Its easy to focus on that part! Of course, there are lots of people who also say that they had a quick and easy induced birth.
The hardest thing about having a date and time for induction is waiting for it! This week has felt like the longest of my life, waiting for each day to go by and getting excited at each and every twinge or movement thinking I was going into labour myself. It has been exhausting! I have been counting down the hours, feeling like i have so much to do, but not wanting to do anything at the same time.
I know that each labour is different and all I can do is wait and see how mine goes. If anyone is interested in hearing my labour and delivery story, please do let me know in the comments below/ facebook or instagram.
PLease send me your prayers and good luck <3 Stay tuned to my Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat for more frequent updates.

Last night cuddling this little one from the inside in our own bed. Will spend tonight in the hospital beginning my induction and will hopefully have my baby girl in my arms tomorrow. Feeling nervous, anxious, excited and overwhelmed all at once! Having a date and time to count down to makes things harder, each hour feels like a lifetime, and each hour can be filled with overthinking and worrying about each little detail of what might come. The scariest part is the unknown! Having wonderful family and friends around make it easier, keeping me and my mind busy. I'm looking forward to this entire new part of my life and new little addition to my family ❤

Leg Swelling

Hello lovelies,
Hope all you pregnant princesses are keeping well.
This is a quick post with a few tips I have picked up on how to deal with the leg swelling which is all too common in pregnancy, especially the third trimester. As you know, if you read my blog, I got sunburned on my legs last month and due to that I got quite swollen and painful legs, ended up in the hospital and sent on my way with a few tips to help ease it. Whoops!
Who knew that your skin becomes crazy sensitive when pregnant?
Anyway, first things first; its super important when pregnant to remember to rest and put your legs UP! Up high! Ideally your legs should be above heart level and supported the length of the leg- by that, I mean to not have your ankles resting on a table and nothing under the rest of your legs- this gives a 'bowed' effect to the back of your knees and leads to other issues. Personally, I found that lying down with my legs up on the wall worked best as they are extremly elevated, supported, and it doesnt take too long for this to reduce swelling. I also like to lay in bed with pillows under my legs, not all night, but for the hour im on my phone before going to sleep (we all do it) is the perfect amount of time.
Ideally, try to avoid crossing your legs/ ankles as Im doing here, tut tut!
Secondly, a big one; Drinking water! I know we're all tired of hearing this one, but theres a good reason for it. Our bodies are made up 50-65% water, which is HUGE! We need to keep these water supplies replenished or we'll get dehydrated and start holding onto water which means bloating and swelling. Drinking enough can help to alleviate swelling overnight by hydrating muscles and flushing body waste.
Water also helps to regulate body temperature, which came in handy for me when I got sunburned and my body temperature was all over the place
And finally, Keep moving! Its so important to keep yourself moving during pregnancy, as I talked about in previous posts the hormone relaxin is at work causing our body functions to slow down by 30%, which includes waste removal from the body. Lucky us, huh? If youre unable to get out for a walk or are working in a sedentary job, simple stretches and movements can be just as helpful. So when youre sitting at your desk, or in front of the telly, you can still help prevent and reduce swelling by bending and stretching your feet 30 times, and opening and closing your fists 30 times. You can also circle and rotate your ankles and wrists 10 times each direction. This just helps to get the blood pumping and keeps the joints mobile.
Even after a few hours of standing, your legs can swell. You can easily tell you're swollen if you've been wearing socks. Just fab!
I hope this will help some of you who are suffering with swollen legs and hands. Anyone out-swelled their wedding bands yet? Im still wearing mine thankfully, but they do get a bit stuck at night time.

Massage during Pregnancy

Hay lovelies,
Hope youre all keeping well, and you mamas-to-be are minding those beautiful bumps.
Im now 33 weeks pregnant and I certainly feel every bit of it, some days more than others. Picking things up off the floor has proven to be a challenge, and socks? Forget about them haha!
A couple of weeks ago I got badly sunburned on my legs and they swelled up pretty badly. It was very painful and uncomfortable, but a trip to the maternity department proved that it was nothing to worry about and just a result of the sun, thankfully! It was great to go straight to the maternity department, and not have to waste several hours in A&E, and the midwives were very friendly and helpful. I was recommended to keep my legs raised, and apply buttermilk to the area... Im not entirely sure why buttermilk, but it worked a treat. My poor legs are still peeling from the experience, but the swelling has gone down and I only have the usual evening-time swollen pregnant legs.
So to help the swelling and pain, I decided to treat myself to a full body massage.
I headed to Kayleigh, from That Skinny Girl, at The River Spa in the Knightsbrook Hotel in Trim. After a swim, I went for my massage, followed by a nice snooze (or snore..) in the relaxation room. It was heavenly! Just what I needed. So, as a massage therapist myself, who is trained in pregnancy massage, here are 10 benefits of massage during pregnancy:
1. Better Sleep/// Its no secret, that massage helps us to relax and sleep better. Win-win!
2. Reduced back and joint pain/// With the ever growing pressure of baby on our back and joints, massage is a great way to relieve, or at least reduce this
3. Improved circulation///
4. Reduced oedema/// A main reason for me wanting to get a massage; with improved circulation comes reduced oedema. Manual lymph drainage helps the body to eliminate excess fluid and swelling in the body. This was a big factor in reducing my swollen legs after the sunburn.
5. Reduced headaches/// Massage helps to recuce muscle tension. Headaches can be common during pregnancy, and tense muscles are a major cause of headaches. By stretching and massaging shoulder and neck muscles, the muscle tension is reduced= less headaches
6. Reduced stress and anxiety/// Taking time out for ourselves to relax and unwind is great for the head
7. Moisturising/// Skin can change during pregnancy, and as it is stretching its really important to keep it nourished. I love to keep the oils on my skin after a massage as long as possible for maximum absorbtion and lubrication.
8. Increased oxygen in the blood/// Good for mum and baby.
9. Aids digestion/// Due to increased blood circulation and elimination of toxins from the body, the effectiveness of the digestive system is also increased. And since pregnancy can cause constipation, massage is helpful.
10. Bonding/// Taking time out for you and you baby helps you to bond. We often become too busy with our daily lives to take an hour out of our day to think of the beautiful life growing inside, but a massage is the perfect opportunity for this.
Why not treat yourself to a massage before baby arrives?

Iron and pregnancy

Hello lovelies,
I mentioned in my last post that I had been experiencing tiredness again since entering the 3rd trimester, thinking it was totally normal and i just had to deal with it.
But, at a hospital check up it was discovered that I'm actually anaemic! This means that im low in iron. Low iron levels during pregnancy can lead to several problems including pre-term delivery and low birth weight. Not everyone gets symptoms but luckily I did and have been able to correct it.
I began by feeling extremely tired, all the time. Even after a nights sleep, Id wake up feeling like it was past my bedtime! I also had dizzy spells and shortness of breath, teamed with really fast and hard heart beats (heart palpitations, or tachycardia I discovered this is called). My gorgeously long and strong nails, only since pregnancy, also became weak and began breaking. It was only once I mentioned that i had felt dizzy that my iron levels were re-checked and they were low!
As I hadnt been taking a prenatal vitamin, as those things give awful constipation (sorry for the TMI) this meant I was not getting enough iron in my diet to produce enough red blood cells... which means less oxygen being carried around my body. This explained the heart palpitations, shortness of breath and dizzy spells.
I was started on a new iron supplement called Ferrograd C, which personally has been working a treat. Its an iron supplement that also contains vitamin c to help the absorbtion of iron, and it also helps with maintaining regular bowels, thank goodness. No more iron-induced constipation! I was also reccomended to drink fresh orange juice with my meals, as the vitamin c in the juice would help with the absorbtion of iron in the meal. How clever?!
I also had low blood pressure due to the anaemia, so in order to keep this regulated, I must drink lots of water each day too. Its not advised to eat large meals, as there is a blood surge to the stomach to aid digestion after eating, causing the pressure to drop elsewhere in the body... Not that I can eat big meals anymore with my ever-growing uterus pressing on my tummy, so I prefer to have smaller more regular meals now anyway.
All this has really helped even out my iron levels, of course along with changing my diet to include more red meat and green leafies :)
Have any of you suffered with anaemia during pregnancy, and how did you deal with it?

Pregnancy Update

Hello lovelies,
Just wanted to post a little update about my pregnancy since I updated last.
So I have had quite a few hospital appointments since my last update. I passed my 3 hour glucose tolerance test which is great, so naturally I celebrated with some chocolate! I also recently had my 28 week check up, which revealed that baby is lying transverse breech. This means baby is flat on its back with head at one of my hips and legs at the other hip.
At this stage of pregnancy, it was hopeful that baby is in a better positon getting ready for birth. While there is still time for baby to turn, a C-Section is on the cards. But we'll know more at my next appointment check up at 32 weeks.
Sleep has become a major problem for me since hitting my 3rd trimester. I find it difficult to fall asleep, toss and turn all night, and wake several times to pee (I didnt miss that early pregnancy symptom. Devo its back!) I have also taken up snoring, much to my husbands dismay. And I dont mean cute snoring either, I mean full on roaring, wake-myself-up snoring. So attractive!
How come no one explained that while sex gets you here in the first place, pregnancy can be SO unsexy! Seriously!
Another early pregnancy symptom that has returned is tiredness. This could be due to the poor night-time sleep, but im finding myself needing naps in the afternoon and getting pretty emotional if I dont get one. Overtiredness perhaps!
My belly is getting pretty heavy to lug around with me, but have been enjoying long walks to keep active, as slow as i might be. Waddle much?!
Myself and the hubbers went to visit Tulfarris Hotel and Golf Resort last weekend and it was beautiful. We had such a great weekend away. We visited the beach, walked the golf course at the hotel and took a tour of Russborough House which was great.
We got dressed up and went out for dinner and a couple of Mocktails and a catch up, which we rarely get to do. It was so enjoyable. And SCORE, my Louboutins still fit! Hubby had to put them on and take them off, but still...

Birth Plans- yes or no?

Hi guys,
So at last weeks yoga class we discussed birth plans. When suggested, my exact response was 'Do Irish people actually write these?' I always thought there was no point in writing one as no one can ever determine how their labour would go... I had visions of crazy women planning out each part of their labour like it was within their control; But then I realised that that isnt the point of a birth plan!
It is there to include anything that you feel strongly about with regards to your labour/ delivery/ aftercare, should you be unable to commumicate it at that time.
So, while birth plans are not a necessity, they can be useful. You also need to remember, that depending on how your labour progresses, your birth plan may not be possible.
10 things to consider when writing a Birth Plan:
1. Who do you want to be present; husband, partner, parent etc?
2. Pain relief preferance. Are you against having an epidural? Do you want to have an epidural as soon as is possible, or would you rather try all other methods of pain relief first?
3. Do you wish to be as mobile as possible or do you wish to stay in bed? Studies suggest that maintaining mobility during early stages of labour can help in the progression of labour, leading to less complications and less chance of having a caesarean section. Just think about it, gravity!
4. Do you have a preferance to a certain birthing position? Squatting, hands and knees, semi-reclined.
5. Do you want to use a birthing pool?
6. Do you want to listen to music during the labour?
7. Do you want your partner to cut the cord? Most hospitals will offer this, but often times if there has been an emergency delivery, it may be forgotten and the doctor or midwives will just cut the cord. If you feel strongly about it, write it down and they will do their best to carry this out.
8. Do you want 'delayed cord clamping'? This refers to the practice of not clamping or cutting the umbillical cord until after it has stopped pulsing or not before 1-3 minutes after birth, as babys blood circulation is still being transferred from the external circulatory system it has maintained in utero (umbilical cord and placenta) into the baby itself, unless the cord is clamped or cut before this transfer is complete.
9. In the event of caesarean section, do you have any requests? Sometimes, you are unable to carry out skin-to-skin after having a C-Section, but while you're being stitched, it is possible for your partner to do skin to skin when you cannot.
10. Do you want skin-to-skin after giving birth, and do you want to initiate first breast feed at this time?
The KEY to writing your birth plan is to keep it in short bullet points, and to be willing to go with the flow. As I said earlier, none of us know exactly how the labour will go, only baby will determine that, so keep in mind that while having a birth plan can be helpful, it is not always possible to carry out each point on your plan!
I will certainly write one up to bring with me, but I dont feel that it will be used. I have no idea what labour has in store for me, what the pain is like, what positions will make me feel most comfortable etc., It is my first baby after all!
All I know for sure, is that I'm getting more and more excited as time goes on to meet my little one and nursery preparations are well and truely underway. Keep up to date with me on Instagram @Theaverageirishmammy

Pregnancy Yoga

At 15 weeks pregnant I began attending a pregnancy yoga class once per week in Trim, Co. Meath. I have loved every minute of every class and will definately be going to the mother and baby yoga classes once baby arrives!
The classes I have been attending are in Trim Castle Hotel each Wednesday at 7pm, and last for about 1 hour 20minutes, and is a 6 week course. 5 weeks of yoga classes, and 1 week of a couples class where the partner will join you to discuss being a birthing partner and to be shown different massage techniques to use on mammy during the labour.
The classes are held by mother and daughter yoga team Swan Lane Yoga, Carmel and Naomi Finnegan.
Carmel is a yoga and pregnancy yoga tutor, and Naomi is a midwife and pregnancy yoga tutor also. With Carmels experience and Naomis midwifery knowledge, the classes really focus on your pregnancy needs; stretching muscles which can become tight with the added pressure of baby, creating space in the chest cavity which can become a bit cramped during pregnancy, and my favourite, relaxation.
The classes usually begin with some centring- breathing and arm stretches to regulate the breathing, relax the body and prepare the mind for the class. While we do work the full body, each week, will focus on a different part of the body; such as legs and hips, shoulders, pelvic floor, hands and arms, etc. Then for about 15 minutes at the end of class, we all lay down on our mats for some guided meditation. Which, let me tell you, is the most relaxing thing ever. I had never used guided meditation until I did it with the ladies, and its just fantastic. Each week im finding myself able to relax easier and easier. It took some getting used to at first, trying to 'switch off', but now, I fall asleep almost straight away each time. Which, I can imagine will be invaluable to me during labour. I genuinely have an 'I can do this' attitude towards labour since beginning the class.
So if you're thinking of doing a pregnancy yoga class, my only advice is DO IT. You wont regret it!

10 Things People Dont Tell You About Pregnancy

Since becoming pregnant, my body has started to do some pretty crazy things. Things that no one tells you are part of pregnancy until you begin researching 'is this normal'.. We've all done it!
So, here are 10 things about pregnacy I discovered since becoming pregnant:
1. The Tiredness.
You'll feel tired ALL THE TIME. I never really understood just how tired a human body could feel until i got pregnant! I mean, so tired, that even in work, I would have to take a nap. When you feel tired, you gotta sleep and thats just it. I even joked to my co workers that i thought i was narcoleptic before I found out i was pregnant, as my eyes would just not stay open. Probably the most difficult early pregnancy symptom as its difficult to hide it from people; Just take it easy!
2. Sore Boobs
And by sore, I mean so SORE.. Like having to wear a bra to bed, and it hurts to even turn around too quickly. This was personally my first pregnancy symptom. I thought it was my period hormones kicking in, but nope; Pregnant :) It lasted for a couple of months, and i found those stretchy training bras from Primark so handy, even doubling it over my regular bras some days.
3. Gas. All Day!
This one, while I had been aware of it, I was somehow still unprepared for just how much gas there would be! Seriously... You'll fart. You'll burp. You'll have trapped wind. Painful trapped wind at that. Theres not much else to say about that one!
4. Constipation.
Another unpleasant side effect of pregnancy is constipation. I have never been constipated like i have been pregnant and constipated! It is SO BAD! Its all down to that lovely hormone 'Relaxin' It slows down your bodys functions by up to 30%... 30%, thats a huge amount. So food travels much slower through the digestive tract, so if you dont drink enough water, the stool becomes dried out, and will not move through the intestines with ease. It is not pleasant! All I can say is stock up on prune juice!
5. Sneezing.
Now this one, was what surprised me most. No one ever mentioned the fact that you sneeze a lot when pregnant. What is that about? We can thank hormones estrogen and progesterone for this one. They cause congestion and swelling in the nose. Some people even find their lips swell. Kylie Jenner anyone?
6. Headaches.
By headaches, I mean blinding migranes! Some ladies get them more than others, some not at all. I have been lucky to suffer perhaps once a month. This one can have a million and one causes, but is most likely caused by increased blood volume and circulation. Or dehydration.
7. You get fat.
And i dont mean a cute little bump. Before that cute bump stage, you will just look like youve piled on the pounds. The bump wont be solid and rounded. Your belly will be squidgy! You'll basically just look fat. I, personally had to increase a pant size, then another pant size as maternity pants just didnt fit my squishy belly properly. My bump popped at about 17 weeks to that nice rounded belly, and by 20 weeks I was in my maternity jeans. I picked up some fab pairs in Next. Only in the past week or so, I have been unable to wear my size 10 uniform tunic for work so have been in pants and tops.
8. The ravenous hunger.
So, it seems pregnancy is not an excuse to eat what you want all the time. Who knew? You dont need extra calories in the first trimester, 200 calories extra in the second trimester, and another 200 calories extra in the third trimester (On Average.. Dont quote me, Im not a doctor.) Its really difficult as you just feel so darn hungry. Well, I do anyway... Thanks to the fact that i havent had morning sickness. Some women actually loose weight at the beginning of their pregnancy. First trimester eating more is so easy as youre just so tired. I used to come home from work, have dinner served up to me by my husband, and sit on the couch for the evening until bedtime. I felt unable to do anything more. Week 14 hit and I had a little more energy and began cooking again. My poor husband! He was so good looking after me during that time. So, if you have a significant other, do a deal that you'll do the grocery shopping if he cooks it up for you.
Its so important to get in lots of fruit, veg and protein so look up easy meals that wont take too long. I like Jamie Olivers 30 minute meals. Baby will go through growth spurts at different stages where youll feel so hungry that you cannot fit enough food into your face... Like when you're due your period. Dont deny yourself your treats. Mine is Loop-the-Loop icepops. Too good!
9. People will rub your belly.
For me, the belly rubbing doesnt bother me. When the person knows me. If a stranger came up and started rubbing me, I'd have no problem telling them not to. Luckily, it hasnt happened me yet! If you feel uncomfortable with people rubbing your baby bump, tell them. Its your body, its your personal space. Rubbing their belly back is usually a good one!
10. Inappropriate remarks/ Advice.
This is the worst one of all for me.
Since becoming pregnant, everyone has something to say about it. Whether its family, friends or colleagues, or even strangers. Mostly its words of congrats.. But you will get a lot of advice that people have gained from their own experience(which is great, helpful and i'll smile and nod and take it on board. But no baby is the same, and I will learn how to parent my baby when they arrive) The worst one is "You'll know when you have kids", and im sure i have no idea how tired you can be, how difficult going to the shops can be, etc. but this is so insulting.
I also got several "Hi Fatso"... Yes, seriously. I got several "Wow, youre all there arent you?" and even a few "OMG, Youre so big"! Which, let me tell you, is not what you say to a hormonal pregnant lady. I already feel so big, so squishy and so fat. I dont need you to remind me!
But none of this matters when youre home with your own new little family, taking wonder in all of the fun and tiredness and dirty nappies that are to come. Little one, I cannot wait to meet you.
Until next time, Conni x

Pregnancy Number One :)

At 21 weeks pregnant, finding that there was not as much 'real' information, T.M.I's and all, about pregnancy as i would have liked, I have decided to write my own!
This blog, Im planning, will be collective... My pregnancy. My fashion. My makeup. My motherhood. My family. My interests. My life.
Feel free to follow me on Instagram at 'theaverageirishmammy', and snapchat at 'theaverageirishmammy' too.
Pregnancy Update Number One
So, I am now 21 weeks pregnant. 40 weeks married, and 19 weeks (hopefully) away from meeting the love of my life. Baby number one :) I have been really lucky with the pregnancy so far- very little morning sickness, or all day sickness as i called mine. I only had nausea for about 4 or 5 weeks and got sick only once, lucky me.
I have been growing steady since Day One, and my bump popped at about week 17. It has doubled in the past 4 weeks since then! Im hoping the growth will even out soon, as my husband was quite a large baby weighing in at 10lbs something, although I was a mere 5lbs something, so hopefully the babys weight will come to a compromise!
I felt those flutters first of all, and baby has been properly moving about for 2 weeks now. My husband felt movement for the first time last week which was an emotional experience.
I have had a couple of scans so far, but the big one will be on Tuesday April 5th, where we will find out babys gender. Then, let the baby clothes shopping commence :)
Until next time, Lots of Love, Conni x
